10 things to do in Richmond in July

The summer heat is back in Richmond so cool off with a fun event happening this July. Starlight Theatre to Music at the Cannery and Women’s Volleyball Grand Prix, and more, here are 10 things to do around the city this month.

Starlight Theatre at Lansdowne Centre

  • What: Take a trip back to the days of poodle-skirts, greased hair, and doo wop music – the Drive-In Movie Series returns to Lansdowne Centre for third year, presented by Fresh Air Cinema. Enjoy classic, family-friendly, and even some of the latest hits on an outdoor screen. Take a drive and cuddle up, or bring a blanket and lawn chair and settle in. Parking is on a first-come first-served basis (first 200 vehicles), with movie audio will be broadcast over FM radio. And keep in mind that this is a family-friendly event, so smoking and alcohol are strictly prohibited.

City Centre’s Concerts in the Park Series

  • What: Enjoy a free night of fun activities and entertainment by local artists at Garden City Park.
  • When: Every Wednesday to August 30
  • Time: 6:30 to 8 pm
  • Where: Garden City Community Park – 6620 Garden City Road, Richmond
  • Cost: Free

Exhibition: Beyond The Horizon

  • What: Beyond the Horizon is a unique exhibition showcasing selected landscapes from the Richmond Art Gallery’s Collection and a series of new works developed in response by students from the Richmond Art Gallery’s Youth Mentorship Program.
  • When: Now to August 20

Music at the Cannery

  • What: The Cannery’s annual summertime evening concert series returns. Each week will feature a different musical act, catering to a wide range of musical tastes, from blues, jazz, folk and more!
  • When: Every Friday to August 25
  • Time: 6:30 to 8 pm
  • Where: Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site – 12138 Fourth Avenue, Richmond
  • Tickets: At the door, $7

Illumination Summer Night Market

  • What: This event features over 300 different booths including over 200 retailers and 60 food ones. Illumination will feature special weekends dedicated to themes such as Music Festival Weekend, Culture Festival Weekend, and Music, Dance, and Singing Competitions.
  • When: Fridays to Sundays until September 10
  • Time: Friday and Saturday from 7 pm to midnight, Sunday from 7 to 11 pm, and long weekends from 7 to midnight
  • Where: 12631 Vulcan Way (behind Home Depot on Sweden Way)
  • Cost: $3 (regular admission)

Thompson Canadian Community Picnic Party

  • What: Join Thompson Community Association members to help celebrate the summer season with free games, activities, community booths and entertainment.
  • When: July 14
  • Time: 6 to 8 pm

  • Cost: Free

Kwantlen St. Farmers’ Market

  • What: The Kwantlen St. Farmers’ Market launched in 2016 as Richmond’s first weekly farmers’ market. The market offers a rotating selection of food trucks and carts, vendors with local produce, fresh Okanagan fruit, SPCA certified chicken and eggs, and more. The market features products grown and crafted by local farmers and artisans, highlighting KPU’s own Sustainable Agriculture students.
  • When: Every Tuesday until October 31
  • Time: Noon to 4 pm
  • Where: Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Parking Lot – 8771 Lansdowne Road, Richmond
  • Admission: Free

Women’s Volleyball Grand Prix

  • What: FIVB World Grand Prix – one of the premier international tournaments for women’s volleyball – will take place at the Richmond Olympic Oval. The city will host six matches among four teams in Group 2 – Canada, Germany, Peru and Czech Republic. This will likely be the only chance for Canadians to see this calibre of women’s volleyball on home soil, as the tournament’s format will change and be re-branded in 2018.

Neighbourhood Free Park – West Richmond Community Centre

  • What: Enjoy an evening of music, “Celebrate the Past with the Future” community art project, family games and activities. Bring a picnic dinner and enjoy the summer night.
  • When: July 26 and August 10
  • Time: 5:30 to 7:30 pm
  • Where: West Richmond Community Centre – 9180 No. 1 Road, Richmond
  • Cost: Free

Richmond Chamber of Commerce Annual Summer BBQ Luncheon

  • What: Join the Richmond Chamber of Commerce for their annual BBQ. Members and those who are not yet members are invited to celebrate the summer with delicious BBQ, excellent raffle prizes, live music, networking and more.
  • When: July 27
