The Science of Sexuality

Do you often find yourself up at night pondering why we have sex? How our personal sexuality develops? Have questions about STI’s? Contraception? Do yourself a favor and check out the exciting new Science World exhibit, The Science of Sexuality. This self-guided exhibition explores the different stages of human sexual development from conception to body transformations that lead to first love, to the discovery of attraction, seduction, desire and intimacy.

The Science of Sexuality featuring Sex: A Tell-all Exhibition takes a candid and respectful approach to a topic that many may find taboo when discussed openly. The fact is that sexuality is a prevalent topic amongst youth, and the problem is that the prevalence of sexuality puts a lot of pressure on young people. However, the information young people get is not always accurate or reliable, and comprehensive sources of information are rare or little-known.

“The Science of Sexuality is designed to answer young people’s most frequent questions about sexuality,” said Bryan Tisdall, Science World President and CEO. “The exhibition is designed for anyone 12 years of age or older and will help develop critical thinking, allowing youth to make enlightened and responsible decisions.”

Though geared with an educational focus towards youth, the exhibition is equally enjoyable and informative for adults a-like, with many surprises and answers to questions posed by us, but possibly, and most probably, embarrassingly dismissed.

Keep Going

The focus of the exhibit is not necessarily sex, but rather explaining the physiological and psychological manifestations of sexuality from a scientific standpoint covering a number of scientific fields including: biology, anatomy, physiology, psychology, public health and sexology.

The Science of Sexuality was developed by the Montréal Science Centre with the help of youth, parents, teaching professionals, medical doctors, sexologists and health specialists. It answers young people’s most common concerns in frank but tactful language and educates them through animated videos, interactive games, personal accounts and explanatory text.

There is also a special section online that has been dedicated to the exhibition in order to support visitors before and after their tour of The Science of Sexuality. It features an overview of the exhibition, pedagogical material intended for teachers and parents, as well as specialized and recognized resources about sexuality.
