Organizers of The Fair at the PNE promise a number of new and improved attractions for this year’s summer fair as a part of a long-term plan to continually improve and modernize the fairground’s programming and attractions.
The Rollerland Building on the southeast corner of the park will host the Angry Birds Universe exhibition detailing the art and physics behind the video game franchise. It features a number of interactive and full-body experiences, such as a laser maze, climbing wall, planetarium, and zip-line that propels guests onto giant foam structures to simulate the actual game.
Over at the Pacific Coliseum, the traditional home of the Superdogs will also be the venue for UNBELIEVABLE: A Magical Experience showcasing world-class magic acts. Next door, the Garden Auditorium will feature a Alien Worlds and Androids interactive exhibit, exploring science fiction and how it might meet scientific fact.
The recently introduced daily Craft Beer Festival, showcasing up to 50 craft breweries, has a new home at the Italian Gardens beginning this year.
Other returning attractions include the PNE Prize Home, 5 km PNE Donut Dash Run, Duelling Pianos, Kidz Discovery Farm, and an expanded outdoor exhibit of 20 life-sized animatronic dinosaurs.
When it comes to new spaces, this year’s Fair will boast a brand new themed entertainment zone called Festival Park, where fairgoers can grab a seat at a picnic table, unwind and enjoy summer jazz, a parade of whimsical colour, guest artists, and other special festival events.
The 7,000-seat outdoor PNE Amphitheatre will again be the venue for the Fair’s nightly free concerts. This year’s headliners include Hedley, The Sheepdogs, Simple Plan, Olivia Newton-John, The Monkees, and Chris Isaak.
The 15-day fair, running from Saturday, August 20 to Monday, September 5, will now include two free gate admission dates on both Tuesdays from opening until 1 p.m.. Additionally, following tradition, seniors 65 years and older can enter for free throughout the day on Thursday, August 25, a special themed day that will celebrate the life and music of late local jazz singer and PNE regular Dal Richards.
