A new thrilling experience will greet amusement park goers this spring: a new pendulum attraction is slated to open in time for the start of this year’s PlayLand season.

Last month, the four black and green legs of ‘The Beast’ were erected at the amusement park in Vancouver’s Hastings Park.

According to the PNE, ‘The Beast’ is the first of its kind in North America and one of the tallest and largest pendulum rides in the country.

Riders will be strapped onto the one-armed pendulum shaft located in the middle of the structure and reach speeds of 90 km/h and heights of 125 feet at full swing. Meanwhile, the 20 seats on the ride – 10 facing outward and 10 facing inward – will spin 360 degrees.

Final testing will be completed over the coming weeks. The ride will be operational for park goers when PlayLand opens its doors on Saturday, May 16.

More rides will be added to PlayLand in the years ahead as part of an $80-million plan to improve the amusement park and expand its footprint from 15 to 22 acres. About $50 million is budgeted for new and replacement rides.
