Port Coquitlam Terry Fox statue vandalized with 'unidentified substance'

Jun 17 2026, 10:03 pm

Coquitlam RCMP is investigating the vandalization of a Terry Fox statue that has left Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West “incredibly disappointed.”

RCMP said that the vandalism was first reported on June 17 about alleged mischief impacting the statue that’s located at the 2100 block of Wilson Avenue.

“Between midnight June 12 and 7:00 a.m. on June 13, 2026, an unidentified substance appears to have been poured onto the statue, coating part of the head and chest,” RCMP said.

RCMP said that Fox’s courage, determination and selflessness have inspired generations in Canada.

“As a Port Coquitlam resident, his legacy remains deeply connected to our community, and this statue stands as a tribute to his remarkable contributions to cancer research and his enduring impact on people across Canada and around the world. Terry is a national hero, and the damage caused to this statue is both upsetting and disrespectful to the legacy he created,” said RCMP Sergeant and Media Relations Officer Adriana O’Malley.

Anyone who might have been in the area between June 12 and June 13 and might have witnessed the vandalism taking place is being asked to contact Coquitlam RCMP about the active and ongoing investigation.

For anyone who does, they can contact Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550, quoting file number 2026-15377.

Mayor West put out a message on X about the incident, saying, “We’ll repair the damage.”

He added, “But what Terry stood for—courage, determination, and hope— that can never be damaged.

He shared a video standing next to the statue.

RCMP has also shared some pictures of the vandalized statue on its X page.

The next annual Terry Fox Run takes place in September, and you can donate to the cause on the website.
