The blistering heat in B.C. on Monday broke a sweltering 49 maximum temperature records for April 18, according to estimates by Environment Canada.

In Vancouver, a sizzling new record of 25.3°C was set, shattering the previous highest recorded temperature of 22.2°C, set five decades ago.

The highest record-breaking temperature in the province was in Lytton, where the mercury rose to 30.6°C, almost three degrees higher than the previous record of 27.2°C set in 1934.

In their weather summary, Environment Canada said the baking heat was due to a very strong ridge of high pressure.

The ridge is forecast to remain very strong through Tuesday – when even more records are expected to fall.
