Taste test: Pepper Lunch's first Canadian location

Dec 19 2017, 10:12 pm

The first Canadian location of Japan’s popular Pepper Lunch is opening in Richmond, and they are getting ready to dazzle with their sizzling steaks and more.

The concept is called “fast steak,” which brings together a casual family environment and the fun of cooking your own meat or seafood on a patented hot plate right at the table. The plate then keeps the food hot while you enjoy your meal.

In Canada, Pepper Lunch will use only Canadian Certified Angus Beef and local, seasonal, ingredients whenever possible, like Steelhead salmon in British Columbia. The quality is evident in the taste, which truly shines thanks to not only their signature steak butter and other seasonings, but also the unadorned simplicity of the side veggies (corn and green beans) and rice.

After ordering at the front, guests are seated and the sizzling plates are delivered to the table. A paper “fence” surrounds the plate for safety’s sake, and it comes with instructions, for those who need a little help, but the staff will lend a hand as needed, too.

Within minutes the food is cooked and ready to enjoy, though it is piping hot.

Dishes like the Salmon Pepper Rice take some quick mixing to get all the pieces together for the right flavour combo. Their Beef Pepper Rice, as well as the Pepper Steak, are the most popular dishes on the menu.

With over 350 worldwide locations, the Richmond Pepper Lunch is the chain’s first foray into the Canadian market, and they already are planning to expand into Vancouver. The Richmond location will have its grand opening on Saturday March 14, 2015.
