Man caught walking in SkyTrain's downtown Vancouver tunnel

SkyTrain’s Expo Line and Millennium Line experienced a short systemwide delay this evening due to a track intrusion in the downtown Vancouver tunnel.

A witness told Vancity Buzz that a man walked into SkyTrain’s Dunsmuir Tunnel at Waterfront Station shortly after 9 p.m., just as thousands of people were leaving the Vancouver Canucks game at Rogers Arena.

The 600 volt power rail on the tracks was turned off in the downtown tunnel as a safety precaution. Transit Police officers pursued and apprehended the man in the tunnel between Waterfront and Burrard stations.

The incident was over after about 20 minutes and regular service resumed as soon as the tracks were cleared.

Following this summer’s series of incidents of passengers opening doors and walking on the tracks after short delays, Transit Police announced it would fine offenders $115 for interfering with the operation of a transit vehicle and $115 for preventing or delaying the closing of a transit vehicle door.

If there is significant damage or a threat to public safety, a criminal charge of public mischief is also possible.
