Swallowtail Secret Supper Soiree

Dec 19 2017, 1:21 pm

The Secret Supper Soiree is a 1930’s prohibition era themed culinary speakeasy tour that is keeping Vancouver diners on their toes. Organized by Swallowtail Canada (same people that brought you the Alice In Wonderland themed pop up concept), the concept is simple: 5 courses, 2 stops, 1 pink double-decker bus and 1 big fat mystery. Diners are encouraged to dress in 1930’s glitz, and with other theatrics in place, this event offers more than just food.

The meeting location is Pacific Central Station which has an old-world esthetic and an air of mystery. Couldn’t set the tone any better. We all hoped on board a pink double decker bus, and after the ring of a bell, headed off to our first destination.

Now I’ve been to this Vancouver spot before, but never to dine.  With interesting stories to read and displays to see, there is tons to talk about with your old and new dining mates; you’re in for a surprise. Let’s just say that it was quite the unsuspecting location…

Cocktails at an unsuspecting location

Course #1: Beet salad with blood oranges

Course #2:  Tomato consomme with picked cauliflower and seaweed

Soon after, we were herded back onto the pink bus and whisked away to our second location. Now this venue piqued my interest. Set to open later this month, this location had a gorgeous interior, and will be quite the spot for events in town. Our dining tables awaited us in a big, open area with wine barrels that lined one wall. Hint.

Here is where we were served our remaining three courses as well as the BC VQA wine pairings. Costumed performers danced down the dining area which was a nice treat.

Location #2 is not done justice with my photography skills

Courses #3-5

Course #3: Poached egg, forest mushrooms, red wine reduction

Course #4: Flat iron steak, potato pave, root vegtables

Course #5: Orange blossom Semifreddo, persimmon puree, pistachio
