Jun 7 2016, 5:56 am

Vancouver Police are near the Fraser River’s shoreline this afternoon to investigate a suspicious death.

According to police, the body was discovered just before 2 p.m. near Milltown Marina – just north of Sea Island and west of Arthur Laing Bridge on the river’s North Arm.

The VPD’s Major Crime Section and Forensic Identification Unit are at the scene of the discovery.

Police say they are unable to confirm any details, except that the body is inside a sleeping bag. The body will not be removed from the sleeping bag until the autopsy is complete.

Anyone who may have seen anything unusual in the area over the last 24 hours is asked to contact the VPD at 604-717-2500 or Crime Stoppers’ anonymous hotline at 1-800-222-8477.

During the early morning hours of Saturday, a 32-year-old Burnaby man failed to resurface after he went for a swim further up in the river near SkyTrain’s Skybridge between New Westminster and Surrey. A search for his body by Surrey RCMP, Search and Rescue, and the Coast Guard was called off after several hours. The incident is not believed to be related.
