Most Canadians have cancelled plans in favour of sleep, and 6 other facts we learned

Jun 27 2019, 3:50 am

We spend a whopping third of our lives sleeping — and for the portion we’re awake, let’s be honest, we’re probably thinking about sleep most of the time.

It’s safe to say that sleep is important. To all of us.

Yes, there’s a reason why millennials have rightly been named ‘The Tired Generation.’ And it’s never been more crucial to put down your smartphone and get a night of quality sleep.

Sleep Country

To launch their new campaign, Tell Us Everything, Sleep Country conducted a national sleep survey to find out some sleep habits and preferences of Canadians, yielding very interesting facts about what Canadians think about sleep, and how they sleep.

Tell Us Everything helps Sleep Country match you to your perfect sleep — since everybody is different, we all have different needs when it comes to our sleep. Whether you are a shift worker, athlete, professional, manual laborer, or office worker, everyone has different hours, and therefore different sleep needs!

Here’s a look at some of the responses of the survey:

  • 71% of Canadians aged 18 – 34 use their electronic devices right up until they go to sleep.
  • Only 15% of Canadians aged 18 – 34 prefer sleeping in a luxury hotel bed than their own bed.
  • 40% of Canadians aged 18 – 34 say they have fallen asleep in a public place, and 22% have fallen asleep on public transit.
  • 61% of Canadians aged 18 – 34 admit they’ve cancelled plans so they could sleep instead.
  • 59% of Canadians don’t always get a good night’s sleep.
  • 90% of Canadians say they’re not scared of the dark.
  • 50% of Canadians say snoring is the most annoying sleeping habit in a partner.

It’s safe to say that Canadians have some interesting sleep habits!

(Although, 90% of Canadians aren’t afraid of the dark? Sounds like some people aren’t telling the truth here.)

The Tell Us Everything campaign is rooted in the idea that Sleep Country’s Sleep Experts are able to match every Canadian to a great night’s sleep — regardless of their sleeping habits. When customers tell Sleep Country’s Sleep Experts everything about how they sleep, they are able to tailor a customized solution to match their needs.

The company, which is celebrating its 25th birthday this year, takes pride in being more than just a mattress retailer — being a one-stop shop for millennials to shop online and in-store (where you can test it out in person), and carrying a full assortment of innovative sleep essentials designed to help all Canadians get their best night’s sleep.

And there is nothing more important than getting a great night’s sleep. Statistics Canada studies show that insufficient sleep (short duration and poor quality) is associated with a range of adverse health outcomes, including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, irritability, and reduced mental well-being.
