A Surrey man was caught driving well over the speed limit and faced some consequences because of it.
The 51-year-old was caught on Feb. 4, just after 8 p.m., while driving “much faster than other traffic” over the Alex Fraser Bridge in Delta, according to the BC Highway Patrol.
The laser reader the officer used clocked the Lamborghini SUV going 197 km/h in a 70 zone.
“Some drivers seem to think that bridges are free from speed enforcement. That is a foolish and dangerous assumption. Bridges are no strangers to deadly collisions,” said Michael McLaughlin, Corporal with BC Highway Patrol, in a statement.
“Driving over double the speed limit is extremely dangerous to you, your passengers, and everyone around you.”
In this case, the Surrey man had two passengers with him, and they were all picked up by a family member after the traffic stop.
The driver faces several consequences, including a fine of $483 for excessive speed, a fine of $109 for illegal window tint, the cost of a tow truck and seven-day vehicle impound, and at least three years of high-risk driving premiums, and escalating insurance costs that will bring total costs over $2,500, BC Highway Patrol stated.
He shared his perspective with the highway patrol officer.
According to McLaughlin, he was “showing his out-of-country cousins the sights of Metro Vancouver.”
“Instead, they saw the consequences of dangerous driving. We’re grateful it didn’t end much worse.”

At least he wasn’t trying to get away from an elk.
