Pattullo Bridge to fully close for a week as opening of replacement crossing nears

The full opening of the stal̕əw̓asəm Bridge between Surrey and New Westminster is just weeks away, and drivers and commuters are being warned of a full closure coming to the crossing as well as the bridge that it will replace.

A representative from the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Transit confirmed to Daily Hive Urbanized that there will be a closure of both the Pattullo Bridge and the stal̕əw̓asəm (Riverview) Bridge for approximately one week starting in early February.

The round-the-clock closures of the two bridges are to facilitate the connection of the roadways on either side to the new bridge.

Exact dates of the closures are still to be determined by the Ministry.

“This work is weather-dependent, and specific dates will be communicated when they are confirmed,” said the Ministry in a statement.

The Pattullo Bridge and the stal̕əw̓asəm (Riverview) Bridge will re-open after the work is completed, with four lanes of traffic split between them.

All four lanes on the stal̕əw̓asəm Bridge, including the new Royal Avenue on-ramp, will open in late February. Work will then begin on the removal of the Pattullo Bridge, which is expected to take approximately two years.

The new bridge will be owned and operated by the provincial government, rather than TransLink — freeing up TransLink’s resources that were previously dedicated to maintaining and operating the old bridge.

Currently, the old bridge sees an average traffic volume of about 70,000 vehicles per day.

The new four-lane bridge is designed to be widened to six lanes in the future, accomplished by narrowing the width of the existing four lanes, using the concrete deck footprint of the pedestrian and cycling pathways, and building replacement pedestrian and cycling pathways on new cantilevered decks on the side of the bridge deck.
