Fire crews find deceased person after putting out blaze at homeless camp

An investigation is underway by the RCMP’s Serious Crimes Unit after a deceased person was found following a shed fire at a homeless camp in Surrey.

Surrey Fire Services was called to a fire at the encampment at 97A Avenue and 137A Street around 2:30 am Friday morning. After the blaze was extinguished, a person was found inside the building.

The deceased has not been identified, and the BC Coroner Service is now involved in the case.

Cpl. Elenore Sturko said in a statement that the Surrey RCMP Serious Crime Unit has taken conduct of the investigation and says it will be working with fire crews to determine what started the fatal fire.
