Thursday Artist Talk: Fiona Tang, “Drawing Without Fear”

What: Vancouver-based artist Fiona Tang shares her process in the Thursday Artists Talk, “Drawing Without Fear.” Tang was the winner of Surrey Art Gallery Association’s first Competitive Art Paint-Off in 2019, and has exhibited at Richmond Art Gallery, Anvil Centre, Queen Elizabeth Theatre, and more.

Fleetwood Festival

What: The 21st annual Fleetwood Festival features cultural performances, interactive booths, activities for the whole family, and more. There will also be a Surrey Youth Talent Showcase.

Band-Aid Concert: Youth Musician Showcase

What: Youth performers will showcase what they have learned at Band-Aid: Youth Musician Development Day in an evening of live music the Surrey Arts Centre.

UrbanScreen Community Art Night

What: An evening of digital art at Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre. Check out local youth-made films, animations created by Surrey Art Gallery’s Art Together program participants with artist-in-residence Cindy Mochizuki, and a live, interactive rendition of Faisal Anwar’s CharBagh project.

Olde Harvest Fair

What: The Olde Harvest Fair includes local artisans and vendors, Surrey’s re-enactment troupe The Re-Enactors, children’s activities, face painting, potato sack races, and more. You can also go on a tour of the 1894 farmhouse.

Fifth Annual Scarecrow Festival 2019

What: Art’s Nursery’s Annual Scarecrow Festival begins with a full day event on September 21 from 10 am to 4 pm, and features a DIY Build-a-Crow station, live entertainment, scavenger hunt, hayrides, and more. There will also be local vendors and food trucks to enjoy. The Scarecrow Festival is in support of Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society, Inclusion Langley Society, and The Versatile Society of Entertainers.

Because We Are Girls

What: Because We Are Girls tells the story of a conservative Indo-Canadian family in small-town British Columbia who must come to terms with a devastating secret: three sisters were sexually abused by an older relative beginning when they were children. After remaining silent for nearly 25 years, the sisters decide to come forward, not only to protect other young relatives but to also set an example for their daughters.

Counsellors will be available for emotional support. Artworks on the theme of sexual abuse will also be on display, and there will be a moderated panel discussion after the screening. Part of Surrey Civic Theatres’ first-ever film series.

National Tree Day

What: Celebrate National Tree Day at Maple Park in Surrey by helping to plant native trees and shrubs. There will also be live music to enjoy, face painting for the young ones, nature activities, and a free hotdog lunch (while supplies last).

Surrey’s Heritage Rail

What: Take a trip back through time by riding Surrey’s Heritage Interurban rail car. The 50-minute trip goes from Cloverdale to Sullivan and back. Then check out the interactive exhibits and explore the Discovery Centre.

Clayton Community Farmers’ Market

What: The Clayton Community Farmers’ Market will showcase local farmers, crafters and artisans. The market will also have a Family Fun Zone, live music and food trucks.
