Drive-by shooting becomes high-speed car chase through Surrey and Delta

Surrey RCMP say they have two men in custody, while another remains in hospital, after a drive-by shooting and high-speed car chase resulted in a single car accident.

At around 8 p.m. last night, Surrey RCMP said they received a 911 call from a person who confronted a suspicious parked car in his neighbourhood with three men inside. The men inside the suspicious car fired several shots at the other man’s vehicle and took off. That’s when the man decided to chase after them at high speed.

The chase went through Surrey and White Rock before heading onto Highway 99 and exiting in Delta onto River Road. Once on River Road, the suspect vehicle lost control and slammed into hydro poll in the 8000 block.

The man who chased after the vehicle waited on scene for police to arrive. One of the suspects, 25-year-old Cory Lee Myers from Surrey, has a Canada-wide warrant for failing to comply with probation and a local warrant for a break and enter.

Surrey RCMP are looking for witnesses, but also want to remind people not to engage in high-speed chases.

“Despite repeated requests to stop pursing the suspect vehicle, the citizen refused to comply with our commands,” said Sergeant Paul Hayes in a release.

“When you pursue a vehicle or suspect, not only are you putting your life and the general public’s lives at risk, you risk being charged yourself and could face criminal and civil consequences. We encourage citizens who notice suspicious people or vehicles to contact the police instead of confronting people themselves.”
