Surprise high-aerial fireworks display at Coal Harbour last night (PHOTOS, VIDEOS)

Confused Vancouverites took to social media last night when random high-aerial fireworks began to explode from a barge in the middle of Coal Harbour.

However, this was a private display held for the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum. The conference is being held at the Vancouver Convention Centre and will end today.

This is not the first time conferences have held major, secret fireworks display. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers have held their annual convention at the convention centre for the past few years – each climaxing with a private fireworks display. Their convention typically happens in September.

For those that were disappointed to have missed last night’s show, five major public fireworks displays are scheduled for this year: Canada Day at Canada Place (July 1), Celebration of Light (July 26 & 30, August 2), and New Year’s Eve (December 31).
