Stanley Park to host summer party for its 125th anniversary

Stanley Park has played a vital part in Vancouver’s identity throughout its history. On August 24 and 25, the City of Vancouver will be throwing a two-day event to celebrate the Park’s 125th birthday.

It is not only the crown jewel of urban parks in Vancouver and Canada, but it is also renowned as one of the world’s largest urban parks. Stanley Park was also most recently named by Travel+Leisure as the second most beautiful city park in the world. With all that considered, it should take little to explain why it is the most photographed place in Canada.

The 125th anniversary bash was spearheaded by the Vancouver Park Board and will be produced by brand.LIVE, the organizers of Squamish Festival and the Celebration of Light. Earlier this week, Vancouver City Council approved the Park Board’s request for city funding to organize the event.

Celebrate! Stanley Park will take place August 24 and 25 at outdoor locations and venues throughout the park. The event is supported by funding from the Government of Canada, local government and corporate funding, including Stanley Park Brewery as the lead presenting sponsor.

When I think of Stanley Park (at least in the context of event venues), I think of it as Vancouver’s answer to London’s Hyde Park. Britain’s greatest urban park located in the heart of its capital is also well known for its regular summertime events, festivals and concerts.

In 2011, the City of Vancouver held a major summer concert in Stanley Park as part of Vancouver 125 celebrations. Last September, it was also the site for Voices In The Park – a major concert benefitting the Sarah McLachlan School of Music, featuring Sarah McLachlan, Bryan Adams, Stevie Nicks, Jann Arden, Hedley and Hey Ocean.

This summer’s Stanley Park anniversary event will mark the third consecutive year a major summer event has been held in the park. Will summer concerts in Stanley Park become a new vibrant and fun annual Vancouver tradition?
