Stanley Park pedestrian dies from injuries after being hit by cyclist

Vancouver Police are investigating a collision in Stanley Park after a cyclist struck a pedestrian.

At around 4 p.m. on Friday, a 71-year-old man was crossing Stanley Park Drive in the area of the totem poles when he was struck by a man who was riding a bike.

The pedestrian was knocked to the ground where it is believed that he suffered a serious head injury. The senior was rushed to hospital where he underwent treatment. However, he later succumbed to his injuries.

The cyclist was not injured, remained at the scene and is cooperating with the police investigation.

This is Vancouver’s second pedestrian fatality out of a total of eight traffic related fatalities in 2014.

In July, a female tourist was walking on the Stanley Park seawall when a group of speeding cyclists swerved out of their bike lane and onto the pedestrian lane. One of the cyclists collided into her, causing her to fall 10 feet of the seawall and onto the rocks below. She suffered extensive injuries to her back, with surgeons at the time estimating it would take her at least three months to walk again.

Police officers and volunteers have also been seen performing radar gun speed checks on seawall cyclists to educate riders on the 15 km/h seawall speed limit.
