The NHL season is officially past the halfway point, giving us an idea of the playoff picture come April. There are still a number of teams battling for positions, but the true contenders have started to separate from the pack.
FanDuel has updated its odds regarding who will win the Stanley Cup, and a trio of Canadian teams feature prominently.
The Edmonton Oilers, who were picked as the Stanley Cup favourite by many entering the 2024-25 season, are currently listed at +650. They’re followed by the Carolina Hurricanes (+800), Florida Panthers (+850), and Dallas Stars (+900).
The Toronto Maple Leafs (+1,300) and Winnipeg Jets (+1,700) rank eighth and ninth, respectively. Seeing the Jets at ninth on the list may come as a surprise to some, as they sit second in NHL standings with a 31-12-3 record.
The Vancouver Canucks (+3,000) rank 14th. Many expected big things from the Canucks heading into 2024-25, but they’ve struggled with injuries and inconsistent play, and as a result find themselves one point out of a playoff spot.
The Ottawa Senators rank 16th in Stanley Cup odds, followed by the Calgary Flames (23rd) and Montreal Canadiens (26th).
The Oilers, Maple Leafs, Jets, and Flames are the four teams who currently sit in a playoff spot, though the Canucks, Senators, and Habs are all within striking distance. We haven’t seen five Canadian teams make the playoffs in a single season since 1985-86.
It’s been a long time since Canada has seen the Stanley Cup, with the 1993 Canadiens being the last team to bring it north of the border.
There have been several close calls since 1993, with Canadian teams losing Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final five times. The Canucks have lost Game 7 twice, in 1994 and 2011, as have the Oilers, in 2006 and 2024. Calgary also lost Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final in 2004.
