6 spring beauty trends you need to know about

Dec 20 2017, 5:32 am

When spring rolls around we tend to find ourselves with a sudden desire to change up our look as both the weather and our mood changes. With spring comes exciting new beauty trends, and for the past couple of years spring was all about the ‘barely there’ look – but this year we’re seeing some boldness and colour come back into style.

We interviewed local makeup artists, fashionistas and beauty professionals to get the scoop on what’s trending for spring of 2016 and why. Here are six spring beauty trends and makeup looks to try out right now:

1. Blue hues

As seen on the runway at designer shows such as Marc Jacobs and Monique Lhuillier, bold as well as pastel blue shadows and liners will be making a huge comeback this season. Mika McInnes of Prép Beauty Parlour confirmed that when it comes to eye makeup, blue hues are very in right now.

Prép loves using NARS Eye Paint in Solomon Islands for this because of its versatility, drama and long wear. Smoked-out pastel blue shadows pair well with smooth matte lips, allowing you to achieve this look without your look being too over the top. (We aren’t trying to completely throw it back to the ’80s or anything.) If you aren’t quite ready to try a blue shadow, you can still get the look (a bit more subtly) with a blue eyeliner or even a blue-tinted mascara.

2. Sheer lace

If A beautiful and feminine spring trend to get on board with is lace. After being bundled up during the cold winter months, designers and fashionistas are now shedding heavy fabrics and opting for delicate, romantic fabrics like sheer lace, transparencies, and lingerie-inspired looks. One of the trends we’re seeing when it comes to lace is solid coloured dresses and blouses with lace sleeves such as this two-piece lace set from Studio 15.

3. ‘Candy Apple Red’ lips

Local makeup artist and founder of Flawless Foundations Makeup Artistry Stephanie Schonberger confirmed the trend of bold ‘Candy Apple Red’ lips, and several big designers such as Oscar de la Renta focused on the red lip this spring. Stephanie gave us some awesome suggestions when it comes to what lipsticks to try in this sexy shade of red.

According to Stephanie, “the closer you can get to Candy Apple Red, the better. This colour is so hot right now. You can opt for a matte finish which is trending right now because it’s a long-wear option for those on the go and also for those who want to wear a fun colour but not have their lips be too overwhelmingly bold. Matte formulas absorb light and will therefore be a bit more subtle.” Stephanie’s favourite matte lipstick in this colour is Smashbox Cosmetics Infrared Matte. The lip is the focus here, so try keeping the rest of your makeup relatively neutral, light and luminous.

4. Sun-kissed glowing skin

The glow is back in again this spring, and on the runway we saw designers such as Michael Kors and Ralph Lauren modelling this sun-kissed, luminescent look. More and more, we’re seeing less powder bronzer and more of liquid and cream stick bronzers to achieve a dewier look. Because sticks, creams and liquid forms blend into the skin better, they look healthier and more radiant than powders allow for a more flawless and natural finish. Try Smashbox LA Lights Blendable Lip & Cheek Colour in Silver Lake Sunset.

Mika from Prép Beauty Parlour reminds us that this season, the focus is less on the contouring craze and more on light, natural looking highlights. The more au-natural the better. Lightly flushed cheeks with a swipe of shimmer will soon be the go-to look for the duration of spring and early summer.

5. Mega texture: glitter, rhinestones and spikes

Another trend inspired by what we’ve seen on the runway is texture added to places where it usually wouldn’t. Adding a little subtle glitter is so last season, and Mika McInnes loves the new trend of stepping it up by adding some real texture.

Rhinestones, spikes, geometric appliqués, even intricate facial accessories will be seen in a lot of print and editorial work, especially haute couture magazines. Treat yourself to a little texture and try out Prép’s selection of nail ‘bling’ and Swarovski crystals to texturize your manicure!

6. French gone wild

Speaking of spring nail trends, Mika also explained to us why the concept of jazzing up the traditional French manicure is trending right now. This nail trend is already picking up quite quickly and becoming very popular. Classic French manicures are being jazzed up with fun spring colours and creative designs on the tips instead of a solid white. Instead of the classic plain tip, the tip design is being altered to be more narrow, thick, thin, zig-zagged, or even checkered. The possibilities are endless with this fun trend.
