Sport Chek store on West Broadway in Vancouver set to close after nearly 20 years, with 50% discounts

Sport Chek is preparing to close its longtime West Broadway store in Vancouver, marking the upcoming departure of a major retailer from the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood.

The store at 18 West Broadway — located at the southwest corner of the intersection of Ontario Street and West Broadway — opened about two decades ago, shortly after the completion of the five-storey, mixed-use building in 2004. The building spans most of the city block and contains 78 residential units above the store.

The Canadian sporting goods retailer occupies just under 20,000 sq. ft. of ground-level commercial space. It also has 36 dedicated vehicle parking stalls in the building’s underground parkade.

Store closing sales began earlier this month, before discounts increased to 50 per cent off the lowest marked price on all merchandise beginning Thursday, July 23, 2026.

A long line of eager shoppers was seen outside the store this afternoon, Saturday, July 25. As of today, there was still a significant amount of remaining merchandise.

The store’s impending closure has been known for some time.

Commercial real estate firm Marcus & Millichap began marketing the Sport Chek unit for lease last year, initially indicating that it could be available for occupancy as early as January 2026. Although the store now appears to be in its final days or weeks, the space remains listed for lease.

The real estate firm notes that the existing zoning permits uses such as cafes, bakeries, bistros, pharmacies, and retail. There is also the potential to demise the space into smaller retail units.

Historically, this Sport Chek location has generally been one of the chain’s quieter stores.

In recent years, businesses in the area have also been affected by construction for the Broadway Subway project. In particular, earlier this year, there was a four-month-long full closure and detour of vehicle traffic on East Broadway just one block east of the store to accommodate work on the future Mount Pleasant Station. And early this week, just to the west, a six-month-long full closure and detour of vehicle traffic on two blocks of West Broadway — between Alberta Street and Cambie Street — began for the next phase of major work on the Millennium Line’s Broadway-City Hall Station.

Mount Pleasant Station, which is set to open with the Broadway Subway extension in late 2027, will have an entrance two blocks east of 18 West Broadway.

The West Broadway location is one of Sport Chek’s smaller stores in Metro Vancouver. After it closes, the nearest locations will be the Robson Street flagship store in Downtown Vancouver, the Marine Drive store in South Vancouver, Park Royal mall in West Vancouver, and Metropolis at Metrotown mall in Burnaby.

While Sport Chek is making a retreat, new major retail businesses are also landing on the Broadway Corridor. Last month, a 19,000 sq. ft. Loblaws City Market grocery store opened directly above SkyTrain’s future South Granville Station at the recently-built The Storeys tower, located at the intersection of West Broadway and Granville Street. Furthermore, three blocks to the east of South Granville Station, Sobeys is in the process of turning the former Toys ‘R’ Us space into a FreshCo grocery store.

In 2024, Vancouver City Council approved the high-density, mixed-use residential and commercial redevelopment of the former MEC store at 130 West Broadway — on the block west of Sport Chek.
