Special Weather Statement issued for Metro Vancouver

Aug 1 2019, 5:15 am

Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for Vancouver Island and the South Coast of British Columbia.

The following areas in Metro Vancouver are under effect:

  • Metro Vancouver – northeast including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge
  • North Shore – including West Vancouver and North Vancouver

The weather agency is calling for “an unreasonably strong Pacific front” which will bring heavy early August rainfall to parts of the province. The front will “tap into subtropical moisture which will amplify the front and help to enhance rainfall totals.”

Howe Sound, Whistler, and parts of Metro Vancouver are expected to receive scattered showers starting on Thursday.

The showers will develop into heavy rain towards Thursday evening with a risk of thunderstorms and gusty winds on Friday morning.

Environment Canada explains in a statement that it’s uncertain where the heaviest amounts of precipitation will occur.
