The BC SPCA’s Vernon branch is raising money to help a starving cat.

Merillo came in as a stray, the SPCA said in a post on its website. The 13-year-old feline was so malnourished that his facial muscles had wasted away, causing his eyelid to fold in on itself.

He has dental issues that make it painful to eat, and he’ll need surgery to fix them, the SPCA explained. On top of that, Merillo also has a thyroid condition.

Now, the SPCA is raising money to cover Merillo’s vet bills so he can live a happy life.

“He looks pretty rough right now, but he is such a trooper. He loves snuggling and is so happy to be indoors and warm. He greets people with loud meows and is such a happy guy,” Vernon SPCA branch manager Chelsea Taylor said.

The SPCA expects it will cost a little over $1,500 to get Merillo healthy again. He’ll need two or three months of recovery time before he’s eligible to be adopted.

His forever family will need to give him his thyroid medication, which he’ll need for the rest of his life.

“He’s been through so much, so we really hope people will help us turn things around for this adorable fellow,” Taylor said.
