Snow day! First snow of the season decorates Metro Vancouver (PHOTOS)
The Metro Vancouver region received its first snow of the winter season Friday night and early Saturday morning.
Approximately 5 centimetres fell across the region, although some areas such as the Broadway Corridor and downtown Vancouver only received a trace of snow due to the heat island effect. Higher accumulations were seen at UBC, Point Grey, the Tri Cities, Surrey and the North Shore Mountains, which received a picturesque decorative top-to-bottom dusting.
Arterial and neighbourhood roads remain relatively clear with little snow buildup. However, drivers should beware of black ice: while it will remain sunny, temperatures will hover at 0°C throughout Saturday and will dip to -8°C tonight with a windchill of -15°C.
There were a handful of road collisions this morning including an incident that led to the temporary closure of Highway 1 eastbound at Gaglardi in Burnaby.
The accumulation from today’s snowfall is likely to remain on the ground for at least a few days. Clear, sunny and icy cold weather is expected to continue Sunday through early Thursday morning when a low pressure system brings rain and warmer temperatures.

- Cypress Mountain: 5 cms
- Grouse Mountain: 10 cms
- Mount Seymour: not open yet
- Whistler Blackcomb: 6 cms
