Smallflower: Gluten-free bakery and sandwich shop opening this summer

Smallflower, a gluten-free and vegan-friendly bakery, sandwich shop and retail space carrying a range of sweet and savoury products, has plans to open in Gastown this summer.

A typical day’s offering at Smallflower will include a variety of baked goods, breads, cookies, cinnamon buns, sandwiches and more, all made in the bakery’s entirely gluten-free kitchen. The majority of Smallflower’s baked goods will be made vegan and similar to the bakery’s affiliated modern diner The Wallflower, it will serve some non-vegan offerings including a range of meat items. “Our little place like its bigger sister will serve omnivores, gluten-free, vegetarians and vegans alike”, says owner Lisa Skelton.

Another aspect of Smallflower is their retail section, which will focus on vegan and gluten-free items.

“We will have dry goods, that include hard to find items invaluable for a gluten-free baker and silly things we love like vegan gummy worms. Our Grab ‘n’ Go cooler will be stocked with a mix of items including grab and go gluten-free sandwiches, vegan granola parfaits, cold pressed juices, salads and more,” elaborates Skelton. “Our breads will be available in limited quantity daily and are available for pre-order and wholesale for restaurants.”

Patrons can drop by Smallflower for quick bite to eat with a small menu of sandwiches, salads, soups and rotating specials like Wallflower’s vegan Mac ‘n’ Cheesey. With seating for around 20 people, Smallflower will focus on their to-go products, however those inclined to sit-in will have the option to do so too.

Scheduled to open in the first week of July, the bakery’s hours will be Tuesday to Saturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
