Small crowd for this year's Vancouver Water Fight (PHOTOS, VIDEOS)
The turnout for the annual Vancouver Water Fight at Stanley Park on Saturday was noticeably smaller than recent years.
Approximately 300 people attended this year’s water fight, which kicked off at 1 p.m. at the water park near Lumberman’s Arch.
In previous years, as many as 1,000 people attended the wet and wild event. But this year’s attendance was subdued due to a number of factors, particularly the ongoing water restrictions and local government pleas for the public to conserve water supplies during this hot and dry summer.
However, according to the City of Vancouver, Metro Vancouver Regional District’s Stage 3 water restrictions did not affect the event.
“Metro Vancouver’s level three watering restrictions do not restrict these activities, so we would not have the authority to issue tickets,” a City spokesperson told Vancity Buzz. “The City encourages people to be water-wise and treat drinking water as a precious resource, but the decision on whether to participate is up to the individual.”
In addition to the tepid interest due to the water restrictions, Saturday was mainly a cool day with light overcast and periods of rain – conditions that were not favourable for the water fight.
