Small Business Profile: Zulu Records

Last week I did my Small Business Profile (SBP) on Elfsar Comics. I have never gotten so many messages thanking me for highlighting them. I was unaware that many comic book lover (geeks) have never heard of the store. That is just downright egregious.

Today I decided to shift my focus to another passion of mine, music. So I bring to you the good readers of Vancity Buzz, Zulu Records.

This independent record store has been operating in our fair city for over 25 years now. Think about that for a minute. Even Virgin Records couldn’t operate a store out here. It just goes to show that the independent vibe is much stronger than some people might be led to believe. As it states on its website, Zulu Records is much more than a record store, its a community centre. That is probably the best way to describe it as music lovers are free to loiter about as the peruse the store and its endless collection of vinyl and CD’s. They also sell tickets to local events.

From time to time the staff may act a bit snobbish, take that as part in parcel when shopping at an independent record store. Sometimes they might think they know more about music simply because they do not conform to popular music. I never really got that, music is music, so just ignore them. Its rare but I’ve seen it happen to Money J Skeets when he asked for the new Nelly CD the other day. Although you can’t fault the staff for wanting to break Skeets face, at that point I too wanted to hit him over the head with a shovel. Fucktard.

Regardless, if you are a music lover (and by that I do not mean mainstream music for the most part) than this is place is a must visit. Go check it out everyone once in a while, The Urban Dweller guarantees you won’t be disappointed. If I’m wrong, then I’ll put all of my money in to Washington Mutual stock.
