Have you ever heard about Kettlebell training?  Darren Young, owner of Vancouver Kettlebell Training, tells us all about the business of Kettlebells!

After using a Kettlebell, you will never find the need to go back to the gym. The kettlebell offers maximum results in all categories such as cardio, strength, core training, endurance, flexibility, and much more.

VCB: How did you come to start your business?

I started my business in early 2010. My friend and I came up with the idea to start our own business training specifically in functional type workouts such as Kettlebells. We saw that there was no such type of workouts out there. Therefore, since we were so passionate about having a healthy lifestyle, we decided to start our own business teaching people basics about Kettlebells and the benefits that come along with training with Kettlebells.

VCB: What sets Kettlebell Training apart from other types training?

All kettlebell exercises are whole body movements which engage multiple muscle groups at the same time. They are also usually done in large, fast and fluid movements which promote strength gains, flexibility and amazing cardio benefits all at the same time. Due to the demand they put on your body, workouts usually only last about 20-30 minutes, 2-3 times per week.
Working correctly with a Kettlebell is the simultaneous equivalent of a jogging or sprinting heart rate (cardiovascular), fast ballistic multi-tasking movement (nervous system), fast ballistic movement (muscular), and extreme deceleration forces (skeletal) all at once! This is called Metabolic Conditioning, essentially combining both strength training and aerobic conditioning all at once!

VCB: What has been the most challenging thing about starting your own business?

Since Kettlebell is still fairly new in the westcoast, the most challenging part is convincing people who traditionally go to the gym to try something new; this is the most challenging part to the advertising aspect of the startup to the business.

VCB: What were you doing before you started your business?

I was, and currently am, working for a private security company. I attended school at BCIT for two years to obtain my Business Management Diploma.

VCB: What does Vancouver Kettlebell Training mean to you?

It means that people who come and train/learn kettlebell through VKB will have the best bang for their buck. I am not a big fan of personal trainers charging tones of money for a workout session where the client does not get pushed to their limits. At Vancouver Kettlebell, I push everyone to their limits for a fair price. I want to see everyone succeed and improve their lifestyle through Kettlebells.

VCB: Where would you like to see your business 5 years from now?

I would like to start distributing Kettlebells to all the major gyms so that everyone can benefit from training with a Kettlebell. Also, I would love to hold educational seminars outside of Vancouver so that people around British Columbia can see how beneficial a Kettlebell can be.

VCB: What is the most unique thing about Vancouver Kettlebell Training?

No gimmicks, just hard work ethic to obtain everyone’s goal!

VCB: Do you have any inspirational success stories to share with us?

I do not have a specific story I want to share. However, I teach Kettlebells to people of all ages. Most recently, I have a 60 year old female school teacher who is fairly active with her daily bike riding. She is a true inspiration! As most men I train cannot handle the tough workout the Kettlebell brings. She has been a client of mine for three months now and she continues to surprise me with her strength, cardio and stamina. I think I may run out of workouts for her! If she can do it, anyone else can as well!
