Single in Vancouver: Planning a single Valentine's Day

Dec 19 2017, 9:40 am

So you’re single for Valentine’s Day. Perhaps you’re in this position by choice or maybe unfortunate circumstances have brought you to one simple conclusion: you should probably make plans with your other single friends (because if there is one evening you shouldn’t be alone on your couch, chips and ice-cream in hand while tearing to a Ryan Gosling film- it’s Valentine’s Day).

You basically have two options: you go out with friends or you stay in with friends. Because Valentine’s Day falls on a Friday this year, it’s rather difficult to use any of the following excuses to stay in alone: your alarm is set for 6 a.m. due to work, you choose to keep your social life to a Friday-Sunday basis, you are unable to interrupt your gym schedule, you have to wash your hair, it’s laundry night, Scandal or The Bachelor is on…and you catch my drift.

Certain factors go into planning a single Valentine’s Day. Will you stay in or will you go out? What is your mood? How is the weather in Vancouver? How many people are in your group? Once you and the tribe of singles answer the previously asked questions, it’s time to plan your evening.

Going out

What are you looking for in a night out?

One thing I know about single women in this city is that most enjoy a night out dancing with their girlfriends. Next time you are out, look around you and make note of the pure joy brought on by a Beyonce song.

Some of my personal recommendations for fun dance floors in Vancouver include: Lamplighter, The Portside Pub and the Roxy.

Live Music

Maybe you are a group of singles with less interest in dancing and more interest in sitting and enjoying live music – this I can relate to (I not only have a thing for musicians but feel strongly that this city has an immense amount of talent that deserves a front row audience of single women).

Some of my personal recommendations for live music in Vancouver include: Guilt & Co, Biltmore Cabaret, Electric Owl, and the Rickshaw.

Other singles

Well we already know you are single so I have this hunch you may want to meet another single person. The fact of the matter is those who are in relationships are likely out with their partners on the Valentine’s Day evening. If you were in a relationship, would you really be alone at a bar or club on V-Day? Likely not, therefore, you can skip the whole “are you single?” question.

I can’t promise you that these locations will be jam packed with single and available men and women but I do assure you, from experience and research, that these spots are known to attract other singles:

Staying in

Sometimes you just don’t feel like going out; it’s more expensive, it takes more effort and you often find yourself asking “why did I go out when I wish I was home in my PJs right now?”

Why not plan a night in with single friends? Try making some of these concoctions at home!
