Shooting near Surrey elementary school

More gun shots rang out in a Surrey neighbourhood on Sunday evening.

The incident occurred at approximately 8 p.m. near 134th Street and 70B Avenue, near an elementary school, in the Newton area. Witnesses told Global News two black-coloured vehicles were shooting at each other while children were playing in the street.

RCMP have found evidence of shots being fired in the area. Fortunately, there were no injuries.

“My son was just out on the streets on the way back from the store about fifteen minutes before this occurred, right in the area where it happened and so it’s really close to home,” Doug Elford with the Newton Community Association told CKNW.

“This is right in the heart of Newton, right in our neighbourhood, and there’s people on the streets, there’s people out and about, and it’s amazing nobody was hurt again. This is enough. Enough of this already.”

Police are investigating whether the incident is linked to the drug turf war between young South Asian and Somali groups. This is the 31st shooting in Surrey since early-March.

Last Tuesday, the federal government announced that Surrey would receive 100 additional RCMP officers and $3.5 million in funding over five years for anti-gang after-school programs.
