Shangri-La Vancouver Set to Open January 24, 2009

We were just notified today that the tallest tower in Vancouver the luxury condo/hotel development Shangri-La is set to open on January 24th of next year. After years of construction it is finally ready to entertain hotel guests.

The tower has brought some life to Alberni Street with Urban Fare and Burberry anchoring the retail spots. Also included in the development are two high end restaurants (probably not the best of times to be opening high end dining establishments though). These will add to the enhancement of Alberni Street. Once Bentall 6 is built across the street (Sport Mart location) the transformation will be complete.

The Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts is the largest Asian-based deluxe hotel group in Asia and chose Vancouver as its first North American property. They were probably looking for the extra exposure they will receive once the Olympics stroll into town.

The tower itself is slick, nothing to fancy or architecturally daring, just a clean looking tower that should stand the test of time. It is especially noticeable from Robson Street and Stanley Park. At the top there are rumours of a light effect, lets hope it is something like the lighting atop the luxurious boutique L’Hermitage hotel on Robson Street.
