Simon Fraser University has teamed up with the RCMP to teach students what to do in the event of a mass shooting on campus.

The pair created a video demonstrating the correct actions to take should a gunman open fire. The RCMP refers to this as an “active threat” and recommends taking one of three steps in the order they’re listed:
- Run: evacuate the area if it’s safe to do so. Find an exit, warn others, and call 9-1-1.
- Hide: If running isn’t an option, find shelter in place and call 9-1-1 or campus security.
- Take action: if you can’t run or hide, take other action to protect yourself. Do what you need to do to stay alive, including using force.
Taking action is only a last resort, according Julie Glazier, director of campus safety at SFU.
“You may literally be fighting for your life,” she said in the video.
She mentions to be aware that police will treat everyone as a potential active threat when arriving on campus, since the shooter might try and blend in with the crowd.
SFU’s website notes that school shootings are rare on Canadian campuses, but they often come unprovoked, are unpredictable, and only end when police arrive or the shooter takes their own life.
