Defying Gravity: Renowned circus troupe brings Séquence 8 to Vancouver

One of the most talked about and anticipated shows at PuSh Festival this year? Séquence 8 from Quebec – a tumbling somersault of a show combining circus, theatre, dance and movement.

Allusions to Cirque are bound to happen on first glance, but make no mistake – Séquence 8 is its own unique beast. Stripped down, meticulously choreographed and wonderfully intimate, this show from Quebec’s Les 7 doigts has none of the usual clowns or circus gags. Just take a look at this trailer:

For just three nights only (January 22 to 24), Les 7 doigts have partnered with Théâtre la Seizième and a local Vancouver producer to put on the much-hyped show at the Vancouver Playhouse. Clocking in at a tense 90 minutes, the show has marvelled full-house crowds as far away as London. Why? The magic is all in the message of the show:

This awesome feat of contemporary circus draws its inspiration from Carl Jung’s statement that “The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed.” There are eight performers, each with a particular skill, but all working brilliantly together as an ensemble. Séquence 8 is so generous, so ambitious, so daring in its sense of physical possibility that it seems to contain every aspect of performance.

Séquence 8, part of the PuSh Performing Arts Festival, runs from January 22 to 24 at the Vancouver Playhouse. Tickets selling fast. More information & advance tickets here.
