Senior killed in Vancouver's second pedestrian fatality of 2020

Vancouver police are investigating the city’s second pedestrian fatality of the year.

According to VPD, the incident occurred in Vancouver’s Strathcona neighbourhood February 6 around 2:30 pm.

A woman in her 60s was crossing the street at Powell Street and Jackson Avenue, when she was struck by a cement truck.

Paramedics came to the scene but were unable to revive the victim and she was pronounced dead.

Police say the driver remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Neither speed nor alcohol is believed to be a factor.

Lafarge Canada also shared the following statement in wake of the event:

Lafarge Canada has confirmed an incident involving a pedestrian and a ready mix concrete truck in Vancouver. This is a very difficult and tragic incident, and we are deeply saddened at the loss. Our thoughts are with the victim’s friends and family, and we are providing the support of our employee assistance program to help co-workers cope with the loss. We are unable to comment further at this time.

The VPD Collision Investigation Unit is collecting evidence at the intersection, and anyone with dashcam footage of the collision or who may have witnessed the incident is being asked to call 604-717-3012.
