Daniel and Henrik Sedin wasted no time backing up their words after being hired as Vancouver Canucks co-presidents of hockey operations last week.
Among the things the Sedins want changed immediately is how the Canucks interact with the community. They’ve seen it slip with their own eyes, after all.
“Looking back, 26 years ago, when we flew into the city, Brian Burke told us that this was the No. 1 organization in the league when it comes to community involvement. We need to get to that point,” Daniel said during Thursday’s press conference.
“We should be the No. 1 organization in the NHL when it comes to community involvement. We’re going to ask our players to do a lot. I think it’s so important for us as players when we did those things. I think it puts perspective in life. I think fans will respect that. You might have a bad game here and there, but if you’re out, you do the work in the community, I think they can certainly buy into what we are trying to be.”
“We gotta bring that back,” Henrik agreed. “Just to have the people in the city and this province to be proud to be Canucks fans again. And that’s part of it.”
The Sedins led by example as players, and it appears they’re doing the same as presidents.
Accompanied by GM Ryan Johnson and team mascot Fin, they’ve already made a trip to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice.
It all starts with community.

Given what we know about the Sedins, this isn’t just a photo op.
A former Canucks staff member who knew the Sedins well during their playing days reached out to me last week.
“The twins did so much more for others than anyone ever knew,” the former Canucks employee told me.

Reaction on social media is overwhelmingly positive.
“THIS is what it means to be a Canuck. Love to see it,” said one fan.
“These guys are the best! I don’t think I could be happier with the direction the team is heading,” said another.

“Growing up seeing how much the Canucks were involved with the community has motivated me to be the same as an adult. So stoked Danny and Hank are leading the way,” another fan added.

The good vibes are aplenty right now, and having the Sedins involved will buy the team extra time.
They’ll need to back up their tremendous work as people with shrewd moves in the front office in order for that to last.
In the early stages of what is expected to be a long rebuild, the Canucks are expected to do a lot of losing next season. But if they can rebuild the culture and accumulate young talent that fans can believe in, it won’t take much for the city to get behind this group.
