The first new member of the Sedin-led Vancouver Canucks staff has been revealed.
In the two weeks since they took over the job, Daniel and Henrik Sedin quickly let go of Adam Foote and the rest of the Canucks behind-the-bench coaching staff. New general manager Ryan Johnson also confirmed that his assistant general managers, Cammi Granato and Emilie Castonguay, would be sticking around. Ditto for director of scouting Todd Harvey.
But the first new member of Vancouver’s staff is a longtime teammate of the Sedin twins.
HockeyNews.se first reported on Friday that Alex Edler will join the Canucks staff.
“The plan is for their former Canucks teammate Alexander Edler to help out at this summer’s development camp, so he will also get a part in the organization,” HockeyNews.se wrote in an article translated from Swedish.
Edler spent 15 of his 17 NHL seasons with the Canucks. He’s still the franchise leader in games played by a defenceman (925) and goals by a d-man (99).
The 40-year-0ld spent the last two seasons of his career with the Los Angeles Kings, last playing in 2022-23. He currently resides in L.A. and was recently seen at Anze Kopitar’s last regular-season game.
Back in 2024, Edler signed a one-day contract to play with the Canucks.
Edler’s impending presence on the staff means the Canucks now have five members of the 2011 squad in their organization. The Ostersund, Sweden, native joins the Sedin twins, Manny Malhotra (AHL head coach), and Mikael Samuelsson (development coach).
Last year, Samuelsson was a key figure at Canucks development camp, suggesting that he and his former teammate, Edler, could both play big roles for Vancouver once camp commences in early July.
In 2025, the Canucks held development camp between June 30 and July 3.
