The Vancouver Canucks’ search for a new general manager has taken so many twists and turns, but get ready for another one.
Henrik and Daniel Sedin aren’t just taking on elevated roles within the Canucks’ front office. They’re reportedly taking on major roles, with new general manager Ryan Johnson apparently reporting into them.
“Barring a complete collapse, it’s going to be Ryan Johnson with the Sedins,” Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman told Bob Stauffer on 880 CHED in Edmonton. Friedman went on to admit that he may have initially understated the Sedins’ new roles.
“I think it’s possible the Sedins could be above Johnson on the food chain,” he said.
CHEK’s Rick Dhaliwal characterized the Sedins’ new roles as “co-presidents,” adding that a formal announcement is likely coming soon.

There has been no shortage of surprises regarding the Canucks in the past week, and the past 24 hours in particular. It looked like Evan Gold would be named general manager as recently as Tuesday morning, with reports out of Boston indicating that he was about to “raid” the Bruins’ front office on his way to Vancouver.
Henrik and Daniel Sedin weren’t being talked about at all last week, other than their role as spokesmen for the draft lottery.
Pierre Dorion’s name leaked just seven days ago, but that seems like a long time ago now.
In choosing the Sedins and Johnson, the Canucks are choosing three men that are well known to fans.
Johnson was a teammate of Henrik and Daniel for two seasons in Vancouver, suiting up for the Canucks as a defensive-minded centre in 2008-09 and 2009-10. After hanging up the skates in 2011, Johnson rejoined the Canucks’ organization in 2013 as a development coach. He has worked his way up the ranks since, climbing to the role of assistant general manager in 2024.
The Sedins, meanwhile, rejoined the organization in 2021 as special advisors to the general manager. They’ve been working as development coaches ever since.
