Seattle Space Needle fireworks on New Year’s Eve to be biggest ever

Dec 19 2017, 9:14 pm

You won’t be able to find a big city New Year’s Eve public celebration in Vancouver this year, the nearest major fireworks display will be at the iconic Space Needle in Seattle.

Organizers of the T-Mobile New Year’s at the Needle say this year’s display will be the largest display of fireworks in the history of the annual celebration. Tens of thousands of fireworks will be set-up at 72 points along the the 184-metre tall Needle, illuminating the entire structure with pyrotechnics when the clock strikes zero.

As many as 50,000 people are expected to ring in the New Year below the Needle while another 40,000 will watch from surrounding neighbourhoods. Premium parties at the observation deck and Sky City Restaurant are sold out at this time.

The free fireworks display will last for 8 minutes beginning at the stroke of midnight. For those watching from home, in lieu of watching countdown reruns of Toronto and New York City, they can view the live broadcast at the Needle on NBC KING5 from 11:35 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

On December 30 and 31, the Space Needle will be lit magenta as a precursor to the festivities to come.
