Search for missing snowboarder on Cypress Mountain

DH Vancouver Staff Jan 30, 2016 8:40 am

UPDATE at 4:00 p.m. – North Shore Rescue have confirmed that the missing snowboarder has been found dead. A recovery of the body has been completed, the next of kin has been notified.

North Shore Rescue is heading back into the North Shore mountains this morning to search for a 40-year-old Surrey snowboarder missing on Cypress Mountain.

Team leader Mike Danks says the man was supposed to be back by 2:30 p.m. on Friday. He was last seen on the westside of Cypress Mountain; crews have found a track leading below the Howe Sound Crest route.

Crews also responded to a second call around 10 p.m, for a group of missing skiers, also on the westside of Cypress below the Howe Sound Crest route. Doug Pope with the rescue team says crews were able to establish cell phone contact and obtain the rescue co-ordinates from the skier’s phones.

Pope says the group were in an easier place to find than the missing snowboarder, and were escorted off the mountain safely.

Hikers, skiers and snowboarders are recommended to stay in-bounds because once mountain-goers leave the boundary, they’re in uncontrolled avalanche terrain.
