It’s going to be the end of an era for Hockey Night in Canada.

Scott Oake is leaving the program, announcing on Saturday’s broadcast that this season will be his last.

“Let’s wrap up tonight with an announcement,” Oake said at the end of After Hours Saturday in Edmonton. “I shall be retiring at the end of this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs. A week tonight we’ll be in San Jose for the final Saturday of the NHL’s regular schedule and that will be my final After Hours.”

Oake’s broadcast career has spanned more than 50 years, including 37 years on Hockey Night in Canada. Born in Sydney, N.S., Oake now resides in Winnipeg.

“I would like you to know that the decision to retire is mine. I’m going out on my own terms. And I greatly appreciate the opportunity, because not everybody in this business gets it.”

Oake joined Hockey Night in Canada in 1989, and remained a fixture on the program when it transitioned from CBC to Sportsnet in 2014. He has been responsible for countless memorable moments on After Hours, where he conducts long-form interviews following the second-half of the Saturday night doubleheader.

“Congratulations Scott, on an extraordinary career,” Sportsnet PR said in a statement posted to social media. “Scott has been a trusted voice and steady presence on Hockey Night in Canada for more than three decades, earning the respect of viewers, colleagues and athletes alike. Through his thoughtful reporting, genuine compassion, and unwavering professionalism, he has helped tell the stories that define hockey.”
