Science World selling pieces of Vancouver's giant FIFA soccer ball at an expensive price

Science World’s FIFA World Cup soccer ball design will soon be gone forever.

Or maybe not.

Work began this week to remove the wildly popular Adidas Trionda soccer ball from Vancouver’s skyline, which has been up since June. But unlike the temporary natural-grass pitch at BC Place, it’s not simply going into the recycling bin.

You can own a piece of the giant FIFA World Cup soccer ball, as individual panels have been put up for sale, with proceeds raising funds for Science World’s STEAM programming.

“Own a piece of history with a one-of-a-kind panel taken directly from The Beautiful Dome,” Science World says in the description of the product. “Panels are sold ‘as-is’ and may be subject to slight imperfections, dirt or minor wear-and-tear. The edges of the panel are grommeted at 300mm intervals.”

The cost for one panel is $999.95 plus tax.

If that price is too steep for you, there are other options available.

Some of the panels will be turned into nine-foot-diameter patio umbrellas ($799.95), 50-litre sports duffle bags ($349.95), and tote bags ($49.95). Because these are one-of-a-kind items, colour combinations will vary. All items are final sale, with no options for returns or exchanges.

Products are made to order and will take about six to eight weeks to ship. Each item is subject to a “minimum order threshold,” meaning that orders could be cancelled and customers refunded if not enough people buy a particular item.

Shipping is available within Canada, with free pickup offered in Vancouver.

Not every piece of the ball will be sold for profit, as select panels are being donated to local organizations as a legacy initiative, notably: BC Place, BC Soccer Association, Canada Soccer, Province of British Columbia, Museum of Vancouver, Destination Vancouver, and, of course, Science World.
