It’s that time of year again: the kids are hitting the books and that means 30 km/h school zones are back in effect throughout Metro Vancouver.
School zones are in effect Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm unless otherwise labelled on a sign, unlike playground zones, which remained in effect throughout the year and are from dawn to dusk.
Fines vary for drivers caught speeding through school zones, but the maximum fine is $483.
Here are the fines laid out by BC’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure:
- 31 to 50 kilometres an hour: $196, three driver penalty points
- 51 to 70 kilometres an hour: $253, three driver penalty points
- 71 to 90 kilometres an hour: $368, three driver penalty points
- Over 91 kilometres an hour: $483, three driver penalty points
So remember to keep an eye out for the white and black 30 km/h signs, as well as the yellow and black school area warning signs.
