There’s a burgeoning trend in major metropolitan cities with unaffordable housing markets – rent a mansion and split the cost with a bunch of friends.
We looked into exactly how cheap this would be in Vancouver – the second least affordable market in the world. Our conclusion? It’s easier said than done.
What we found was a limited quantity of “mansions” for rent in the areas between the North Shore and South Vancouver. While there were many homes available, the number where the price per bedroom fell below $1,000 a month was smaller than we hoped.
The homes also didn’t qualify as mansions, in our opinion. Fitting seven bedrooms into a 3000 sq. ft. house may make it sound big, but that means each bedroom is likely smaller than a typical dorm room.
If you really want to live in a Vancouver mansion, prepare to pay much more. A stunning 5,000 sq. ft. West Vancouver home rents for about $30,000 a month, meaning each occupant of the five bedroom house would have to buck up $5,000 each month.
If you’re really in it for the deal, it might take a while to come across that perfect palace, but don’t lose hope; they’re out there.
