VIBF Saturday @VogueTheatre Catherine D'Lish, Burgundy Brixx and Lola Frost with legend Miss Judith Stein

Dec 19 2017, 3:29 pm

Catherine D’Lish, Foxy Tann and Miss Judith Stein headline tonight’s VIBF show at the Vogue Theatre. Last night’s performances brought out the best of Vancouver’s burlesque community. Tonight we should see more glitter, more sex appeal and a lot more skin.

Last night at the Vogue Theatre was truly inspiring. The historic theatre was filled with fans, family, artists, photographers and writers. The synergy in the room was electrifying and everyone was in great spirits as the performers engaged us, captivated us and even gave us something to think about! (Bloody Betty)  We had performances that were artistic and transformational (Ruthe Ordare, Tranny Zukko’s Dirty Vanities and Nicky Ninedoors with featured musician John Ninedoors to name a few.)

Headliners Russell Bruner and Shannon Doah gave outstanding performances that had the audience on the their feet wanting more! Tonight’s headliners should prove just as powerful. Canadian burlesque legend Miss Judith Stein takes the stage this evening and Catherine D’Lish, who is said by the Vancouver International Burlesque Festival as being the most influential burlesque artist performing today.  With the caliber of talented performers tonight we should all be on our feet performance after performance!

Vancity Buzz chats with the seductive VIBF performer Lola Frost just days before she takes the stage again at the Vogue Theatre. We even get a little lost along the way in the Court House parking lot with two other performers, the talented Ruthe Ordare and the lovely August Wiled. Not a bad place to be at 1 a.m. with three gorgeous women.

You are performing on the same stage as some of the world’s most successful and interesting people. Diana Krall graced that stage with her beautiful intoxicating voice. How does it feel to stand on that stage looking out?

I have been on that stage 3 years in a row, the nostalgia infuses me with passion. Looking out makes me feel connected to the audience while giving them my ultimate expression. Houdini also graced that stage, I like to think the ghosts keep us company in the dressing rooms.

If you could perform anywhere in the world where would it be?

Berlin, Paris and Iceland.

What makes you feel guilty?

Taking time off.

Who was the first person/animal you said I love you to?

My mother.

Who was the last?

The letter carrier, she brought me a package and it just slipped out. I made her smile though.

How many tattoos do you have?

7-ish…a few of them are several put together, so I count them as one.

What is the next adventure you will take?

A glitter pilgrimage to Las Vegas to compete, perform and be a part of the Burlesque Hall of Fame in June.

When was the last time you took a risk?

I try to take little risks everyday, it helps me elevate from my comfort zone. The last big one I took was in September. I left my “muggle” job and becoming a full time artist, instructor and co-studio owner.

Favourite patio in Vancouver?

The Chill Winston. Hands down.

Favourite  place to take a nap?

I’m an avid power napper! 20 mins here or there, legs up the wall on the floor, in the bed, on the loveseat, in the car, on my Lovers lap. I’m easy. Not cheep, but easy. 😉

This is a task (Describe your life story in 25 words. Now do it in 15….)

Cleaning the bathroom. Even with rhinestoned rubber grooves it gets the thumbs down.

Now do it in 5.  Love, Dance, Perform, Teach, Make Out

Lola – Fan Question- When did you know that this is what you wanted to do?

I came out of the womb with jazz hands and a cocked eyebrow looking for a stage.

Vancouver is lucky to have so many star performers in one city, we have heard many times in the festival from international performers that Vancouver has the best burlesque in the world. How fun is that? Vancouver even has a Burlesque Centre, it is the only one of its kind in the world.  You can take classes, have private lessons, learn from Vancouver’s best instructors on the art of strip tease, they offer workshops and drop in classes.

We spoke earlier this week with Burgundy Brixx, who produced Gypsy Rose Lee at Minsky’s Burlesque delighting fans and artists alike.  She had a little bit more to say on VIBF, Kitty Nights and why she is incredibly supportive of  women in business –  take a look!

Kitty Nights is a huge success and a great show to watch, is there anything you want to share for the fans of Kitty Nights coming to see you at VIBF?

Kitty Nights fans who are used to seeing me up close and personal at The Biltmore Cabaret are in for a very different experience at the Rio and Vogue.  I really feel like I’m in my element up on those stages. The scale of the stage and productions is much bigger, and the lighting may make us appear more sparkly, but I still try to keep my connection with the audience as intimate as possible – so if I see the familiar face of a Kitty Nights fan out there in the audience, they shouldn’t be surprised if I lock my gaze on them from the stage with a wink and a smile!

You are a wonderful supporter for women in business any shout outs for VIBF?

It’s really important to me to support and promote all the other female owned and operated businesses that help sustain and support our community as a whole. This weekend I’m super thankful for Kristi Johansen at East Vanity Parlour for taking care of my wavy red locks, Shimona Henry of Pinup Perfection Photography for my promotional photos, sustenance at The Wallflower Diner on Main Street and Bandidas on Commercial Drive, and last minute glam and accessories for the weekend at Scout Boutique and The Jean Queen!

We have read stories of a male ghost at the Vogue –  any feelings while on stage? Any strange happenings?

I’m one of those rare people who is “protected” from ghosts. All my life I’ve been fascinated by them and wanted to experience one, but I’m told that since my birthday is November 1st (All Saints Day) I’ll never see one!

Sometimes when shows have this many remarkable performers from all over the world we forget about the hosts, the people that keep the show going and are minds busy from trying to check our phones, or wondering what the latest news on Twitter is. Vancouver burlesque has a very charming gentleman known as the Purrrfessor, host of Kitty Nights, who will also be hosting at Saturday’s VIBF showcase night.
