Safeway to terminate club card loyalty program

DH Vancouver Staff Apr 03, 2014 5:09 pm

Beginning this Friday, April 4, 2014, Safeway stores in Canada will no longer require its shoppers to carry their club card to take advantage of store sales and discounts.

All customers will be able to access the supermarket’s stores lowest prices every single day – no club card or phone number will be required.

More information on the discontinuation of Safeway’s club card program will be made available beginning on Friday. The Air Miles reward program will not be affected by these changes.

Safeway has 213 supermarket stores across the country and was purchased by Sobeys in 2013 for $5.3-billion, ending American-owned Safeway’s presence in Canada. It is not known whether more changes are coming to Safeway Canada, including a rumoured rebranding of all remaining Safeway locations to Sobeys.

The Safeway club card loyalty program first began in the late-1990s.
