Safeway recalls cucumbers, in-store food over salmonella

Dec 20 2017, 1:14 am

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a recall notice warning consumers of a possible salmonella contamination in field cucumbers purchased from Safeway Canada stores.

This includes fresh field cucumbers sold in bulk (UPC 4062) as well as in-store produced food products that contain cucumbers, such as Greek salad, vegetable trays, sushi and sandwiches purchased on or before September 6.

The recall notice is in effect for stores located in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario.

Anyone who may have these recalled products is asked to throw it away or return it to the Safeway store where it was purchased.

Salmonella contaminated food does not look or smell spoiled. People who ingest food contaminated with the bacteria may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Symptoms typically last between four to seven days.

Those who are particularly vulnerable are young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. Infections can be serious and sometimes deadly.
