Rogers Wireless becomes second to support iOS 8's new Wi-Fi calling feature

Rogers Wireless has confirmed it will support Apple devices’ new Wi-Fi calling featured, introduced as part of iOS 8 at Apple’s recent Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), according to iPhone in Canada.

The feature will allow users to make phone calls without using a cellular connection, which will allow usage when you’re low on minutes or without service, for example.

“We’ll support the iOS 8 Wi-Fi calling feature when it becomes available in Canada,” Rogers told iPhone In Canada in a statement. “In the meantime, Rogers customers using the Rogers One Number service on their computer, tablet or smartphone can already make calls over Wi-Fi. They can video chat with other Rogers One Number users or call any Canadian number for free, no matter where they are.”

This makes Rogers the second cellphone carrier to announce its support, following T-Mobile’s announcement on June 2.

Whether fellow Canadian carriers Telus and Bell will also support the feature is not yet known.

iOS 8 is expected to be available to consumers sometime this fall.
