Robson Square ice rink to close for the season after Valentine's Day

It’s the final call for avid skaters at Robson Square.

The free outdoor ice rink in downtown Vancouver will melt away this season after Tuesday, February 14 – Valentine’s Day. Skating is free for anyone who brings their own pair of skates, otherwise skates can be rented on-site.

The rink is open from 9 am to 9 pm today and tomorrow.

This was the rink’s eighth consecutive winter season after it reopened in late-November 2009 following a $2-million repair and upgrade, funded partially by General Electric, in time for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Prior to the renovation, the rink was closed for nearly a decade.

However, this year’s skating season at the ice rink is approximately two weeks shorter than usual. Each season, the rink normally opens on December 1 and closes on February 28.
