The Richmond RCMP is warning the public about an alleged scheme involving the fraudulent sale of luxury vehicles, which is causing innocent people to become involved in crime.
In a news release on Friday, Richmond RCMP stated that the victims are usually approached with what seems to be a “money-making opportunity,” involving the purchase and export of luxury vehicles in high demand overseas.
According to the investigators, the individual finances the vehicle through a third party, registers it in their name, and then hands it over to be stored elsewhere.
Shortly afterward, they’re told the vehicle has been stolen and are encouraged to report it to ICBC.

“These victims are unwittingly participating in a criminal offence as a form of money mule,” said Corporal Ryan Lee with Richmond RCMP’s Property Crime Unit in a statement.
“A money mule is someone who transfers illegally obtained money on behalf of criminals; however, in the case of these investigations, it’s vehicles being used instead of money.”
Police believe the Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) of the vehicles are being changed, concealing their stolen status and allowing suspects to resell them locally or ship them overseas.
The Richmond RCMP is urging people not to register vehicles for other parties, regardless of how convincing the offer may seem.
Anyone with information or who thinks they may have been a victim is asked to contact their local police detachment.
